On March 3rd and 4th the Wichita Mountains Bicycle Club hosted the 20th and last 12 Miles of Hell on Fort Sill, Oklahoma's rugged granite slopes. Better known as the stomping grounds for the great Comanche Chief Quannah Parker and Apache Chief Geronimo and the notorious James Brothers, the Wichita Mountains provide the perfect setting for the world's #1 sport. With craggy, gut-wrenching climbs, house-sized rocks, wet-your-pants downhills, and spiders as big as you hand, there's nothing mild about the 12 Miles of Hell. One of the most prestigious awards is a trophy for the most horribly abraded epidermal tissue.
Usually 14 to 17 miles long ('07 race was 17.5 miles), the event gets its name from the first 12-mile course. While the distance may seem a bit short for many experts, the difficulty factor ensures that nobody finishes begging for more.
